Work Preparation

What’s the programme about?
The Work Preparation Programme aims to develop skills to help you compete effectively in today’s job market. It emphasises personal development to increase your chances of finding and sustaining employment.

Who is it for?

The programme is aimed at people who have a disability and are unemployed. If you are physically disabled, have mild learning difficulties or a mild to moderate sensory impairment, then this course could help you.

What will I learn?
You will learn how to:
• Write a good CV.
• Prepare effective covering letters to employers.
• Fill out job application forms with ease.
• Improve your self-confidence and assertiveness.
• Develop better interview techniques.

What will I achieve?
By the end of the programme you will:
• be better prepare d to compete in today’s job market
• have identified your strengths and discovered a suitable career path
• have developed the skills you need to market yourself to employers

How often will I attend?
Attendance will be agreed with your Jobcentreplus Disability Employment Advisor, but is typically for 15 hours per week for between 8 and 21 weeks.

How will the programme be delivered?

The programme is led by Employment Advisers through:
seminar presentations, written material, videos, group work and one-to-one sessions.
Full participation will be encouraged to look at the practical issues relating to employment.
Weekly assessments are made by the tutors and will be discussed with you to make sure that you feel you are benefiting from the programme. This gives you the opportunity to comment and make suggestions for future programmes.

After the programme
By the end of the Work Preparation Programme you should expect to be:
• in work experience
• employed or self-employed
• considering further education
• looking at additional training
You will then receive continuous support for at least another 13 weeks either to help you find work or to help you progress in your new job.

Work Preparation provides you with travel expenses for bus or train fares.
