London Development Agency
LDA/ESF Co-Financed Projects Case Study

The London Development Agency (LDA) is the Mayor's agency, responsible for driving London's sustainable economic growth. We work to deliver the Mayor's vision for London to be a sustainable world city with strong, long-term economic growth, social inclusion and active environmental improvement.

What's the Project all about?

OSWP provides disadvantaged jobseekers with the opportunity to develop employability skills and basic skills that will facilitate their entry into the labour market.

The project is attempting to reduce the level of disadvantaged jobseekers in London who are finding it increasingly difficult to secure employment.

The project commenced in the autumn of 2006 and runs through to summer 2008. It is available to all disadvantaged people from across including the long-term unemployed, people from under represented minority groups, disabled people and ex-offenders.

Project Manager Iain Murray comments:

“A recent statement made by a young beneficiary encapsulates the projects ethos:”

“The project found me a job I really enjoy.  I am so happy now and have made new friends.  My mum is proud of me and I have built my confidence “ (JW).

One Step Work Placements (OSWP)

Miss P enrolled onto the project having been unemployed for six months and requiring guidance and direction to support her activities to re-enter the labour market.  Having Bsc (Hons) degree in Health Promotion from Brunel University, her long term goal was to work within a health field setting. She expressed a particular interest in employment opportunities which would involve her in promoting health to the community.

Although Miss P had a sound employment history and good educational background, she lacked confidence in promoting herself to potential employers. Naturally quiet, she nevertheless very quickly showed herself to be an excellent group member and made valuable contributions to the team dynamic. As an individual, she benefited particularly from facilitator guidance and support in writing speculative letters and approaching potential employers.

Her confidence improved rapidly and, as a result, she secured full time employment as Store Manager in a Health Food shop. She feels the position will enable her to gain valuable experience for her future career, as she is now using her expertise to make contact with the public in an advisory capacity.
